Description -

A romantic novelization of the Irish author's hit play about the vagabond poet Francois Villon. Basis for five films, most recently in 1956 as *The Vagabond King* directed by Michael Curtiz and featuring Kathryn Grayson, Oreste Kirkop, Rita Moreno, and Cedric Hardwicke; prior to that with the same title in 1930 with a script by Herman J. Mankiewicz and featuring Dennis King and Jeanette MacDonald, but perhaps most memorably with its original title in 1938, directed by Frank Lloyd with a Preston Sturges script, and featuring Ronald Colman and Basil Rathbone.

 

Author -

Justin Huntly McCarthy, Irish politician, journalist, novelist, and historian. After a long career in journalism, he entered the British Parliament, advocating home rule for Ireland. He was at first a supporter of, then head of the opposition to, Charles Parnell. He is best known for his novel If I Were King, which he based on the life of the vagabond poet, Francois Villon. His later dramatization of the novel became the basis for the operetta The Vagabond King.
