"When Ralph Stein reported for basic training at Camp Lee, Va., he might well have been mistaken for Private Finch.  In private life he had been a gadget collector, although for a living he had drawn funny pictures of funny people....In the Army he had hoped to avoid people by concentrating on such gadgets as 105-mm howitzers or half-track engines.

 

Harry Brown, meanwhile, had been sent to Fort Belvoir, VA.  He was a poet suddenly enmeshed in a giant System;  he had left a sedentary writer's life for the hand-begriming, back-breaking Corps of Army Engineers.  Such a fate would try any poet's soul..."
