Owing to the lack of material from which to draw, it has been impossible to make his history complete. A bundle of old family letters or his diary (provided he had ever kept one), would be invaluable, but, without them, we must rely exclusively upon the ancient records. With our stock of information so limited, we cannot penetrate into the privacy of his home nor gain more than a slight insight into his character, but are obliged to content ourselves with the principal events of his life. It has been my aim, however, to examine thoroughly all sources of infor- mation at command, and, so far as possible, to make this work exhaustive.
