from intro -

Runaway Camel takes place today, in a small village in the Sahara Desert.  In northern Nigeria, near Kano, one of the world's busy international airports, the great grass heights which pastur immense herds of cattle begin to change into sandy soil and gently ease off north into the desert...there are still many hundreds of tiny villages in the desert, little oases where the villagers live as they have for centuries...Distances here are measured by the day's journey.  On the caravan, pack camels go only ten or fifteen miles a day, since the camel drivers often plod on foot, with goats straggling alongside.  A racing camel, however, may go 100 miles a day.
