The Hindenburg was commissioned in March 1936.  Assigned builder's number LZ 129 (Luftshiff Zeppelin l29), it was actually the 118th of the Zeppelin type dirigible built in Germany, other numbers in the series having been assigned in orderly progression to ships laid down on paper but never built.
 
It was the pride of Germany and the symbol of post-war German commercial expansiveness...
